CUSTOMS CONCERNING TIMES

Meal times
In Barcelona, as in the rest of Spain, people normally have their meals later than in other European countries. The first meal of the day, esmorzar, is usually eaten between 9:00 and 11:00 in the morning, and tends to be lighter than in the rest of Europe, being similar to what hotels call a "continental" breakfast. People sit down for lunch between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon and for dinner between 9:00 and 10:00 in the evening. Nevertheless, restaurant hours are adapted to the pace of the working life, and you can find lunch as early as 1:00, while dinner may be served as late as 11:30 at night. It should also be noted that there are restaurants where you can eat at any hour of the day.

Working hours
The workday generally begins at 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning lasts till about 8:00 in the evening, with a one- or two-hour break for lunch in the early afternoon.

Shopping hours
Shops in Barcelona open their doors between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning, and generally close for lunch at 1:30 or 2:00. They open again in the afternoon between 4:00 and 5:00 and remain open until 8:00 or 8:30 in the evening. Nevertheless, it should be noted that many shopping centres and larger establishments do not close at midday. Many shops and all department stores and shopping centres open Saturday afternoons, while all shops close Sundays, except for a few dates when they are permitted to open.

Entertainment

Theatres and cinemas

On working days, most cinemas have four showings between 4:00 in the afternoon and 10:00 in the evening. On weekends, some cinemas have matinees, at 11.30 or 12:00 noon, and late night showings at about 12:30 or 1:00 in the morning. Most theatres have one daily show, normally starting between 9:00 and 10:30 in the evening. Some theatres, however, have two shows, especially on Saturdays, with show times at 6:00 and 9:00 or 10:00 in the evening.

Discotheques and clubs

Clubs and bars with DJs or recorded music generally open from 6:30 in the evening to 3:00 in the morning, while discotheques open at 11:30 pm and close at about 4:30 am.

Social habits in Barcelona

Although more and more Barcelonans like to go out during the week, Fridays and Saturdays are still the big nights out on the town. A typical evening out begins with dinner at a restaurant, followed by a show at the theatre or a concert, and from there on to a discotheque, bar, jazz club or elsewhere.

The city centre bustles with shoppers on Saturday afternoons and evenings, and the enormous number of bars and cafés in the area fill with people looking to for a break and refreshment.

Sunday mornings find throngs of strollers all around the city. In Barcelona, going out for "tapas" is not as typical as it is in other cities in Spain, but it is customary to have an aperitif at the terrace of a bar on sunny days, or inside if the weather does not permit. Nevertheless, for many Barcelonans the weekend also means getting out of the city.
